Overview

REST Assured was built as a team project for my Software Engineering class at Bethel University during my senior year. The app is a full-stack order management demo with separate admin and customer workflows, connecting a React frontend to Spring Boot services, inventory data, messaging, and persistence.

What I Built

This was a team of three, and my main focus was the frontend and the GitHub Actions CI/CD workflow. I worked on the React/Vite interface that supports customer catalog browsing, cart and checkout behavior, admin inventory tools, order management, and developer-facing API and messaging views.

Technical Highlights

  • Spring Boot services expose inventory, catalog, and order APIs.
  • Spring Cloud Gateway forwards public API traffic to the backend.
  • RabbitMQ handles order-created events and asynchronous workflow steps.
  • MySQL stores inventory and order data through Spring Data JPA.
  • Docker Compose runs the frontend, gateway, backend, database, and broker together.
  • GitHub Actions verifies the frontend, backend, startup path, and messaging smoke test.

What I Learned

This project gave me real hands-on learning with Docker and GitHub Actions. The hardest part was working through the different terminology and mental models between C# and Spring Boot, especially around models, entities, and how backend data structures should be represented in the frontend. It pushed me to think past individual endpoints and into how a full system behaves when UI, backend services, CI, containers, and messaging all have to work together.
